We use high-performance computing on supercomputers and parallel clusters to solve complex problems in physics that would otherwise be impossible to solve via analytical methods. Our main research areas are presently to understand the physics of soft matter systems in general, with a particular emphasis on magnetic gels, active matter, and biopolymers.
We are seeking highly motivated candidates for PhD or postdoctoral positions in the field of computational soft matter physics. Thesis topics can be in the fields of soft magnetic materials such as magnetic gels, the growth and active motion of bacteria in complex environments, and sustainable polymers derived from by-products of the food industry.
The projects focus on simulations using a range of methods, including coarse-grained and atomistic molecular dynamics, systematic coarse-graining, machine learning, and continuum solvers for hydrodynamics, such as the lattice-Boltzmann method.
Among other tools, we use the open-source simulation package ESPResSo (https://espressomd.org), which is also primarily developed at our institute.
Key Qualifications:
- A Master's degree in Physics or related degree in natural sciences
- A strong sense of curiosity and perseverance to tackle interesting and complex problems, both individually and as part of a team.
- Previous experience in numerical methods and simulation. Programming experience in Python and/or C++ is an asset.
- A willingness to collaborate closely with experimentalists.
